Zoonotic diseases (Rabies): learning field trip in Dai Tu district, Thai Nguyen city

Continuing the plan as well as responding to the World Rabies Day (September 28), on 08/20/2016, Thai Nguyen One Health Club organized an activity "Zoonotic diseases (Rabies): learning field trip in Dai Tu district, Thai Nguyen City”.

Club’s members visited Dai Tu Preventive Medicine Center with the guidance and enthusiasm sharing of the director of the center (Mr Nam Vu Hoai). In the 2 year – period between 2013 and 2015, there were approximately 1,000 people who had been vaccinated for rabies; especially on January 1st 2015, a five year old girl was dead due to rabies. By August 2016, number of people vaccinated against rabies was 402. Next were the exchange and lively discussions between the students and the local authorities.

Continuing the trip, Thai Nguyen One Health Club’s members also visited the Veterinary Centre of Dai Tu district with enthusiastic reception of Mr Truong Bui Van and local staffs. Mr Truong said: “by the end of this spring, the percentage of vaccinated dogs in local area was 56% and we are striving to rise the percentage of vaccinated dogs in the coming period”

Through this activity, the students learned much useful knowledge about causes, source of infection, mechanism of transmission of infection, symptoms, rabies prevention, collaboration, … to prevent rabies infection in the community

“Through this field trip,we‘ve got lots of useful knowledge about rabies prevention. There were always continuous exchanges between students and health workers, veterinary and inhabitants. So I can see the inquisitive spirit of students from both schools." Minh Nguyen Thi Nguyet - Public Health Student -  University of Medicine and Pharmacy.

"After participating in this activity, I have gained a lot of practical knowledge about this disease as well as Rabies prevention. It is rewarding and meaningful. I would like to thank the teachers who has organized such a meaningful field trip". Nguyen Xuan Quy - Veterinary student – University of Agriculture and Forestry.

In the next time, Thai Nguyen One Health Club will continue organizing more meaningful activities to help students improve their so knowledge that the students can apply flexibly One Health Core Competencies.
